My “Paint Box” (2017-21) holds a collection of photographs of digitally manipulated journal jottings spanning a year. It’s a book-like-box. Two visitors to the show mentioned other examples of artist-made boxes holding process notes. “The Green Box” (1934) by Marcel DuChamp (thank you Kevin Noble) and “Rolywholyover: A Circus” (1993) by John Cage (thank you Todd Lambrix.) I think of my “Paint Box”as an answer to the question, “What does this (abstract) painting mean?” The answer: open the box and discover for yourself.
