The abstract, geometric zig zag shape in this painting is inspired by my investigation into the history of casting protective spells. Interestingly, my research took me to recent advances in the science of the brain. I learned about grid cell neurons within the "old brain" that fire at regular intervals as we navigate an open area of space. They allow us to understand our position in space by storing and integrating information about location, distance and direction. They allow us to safely navigate our way. The pattern created by the neuron's firing creates the same zig zag pattern as the one in my painting.
